Chainsaw Bike

Runt bike

This is an old project that I’ve finally got around to writing about.  One day my friend came over to my house with this miniature “runt” bike.  He jokingly suggested putting a motor on it… I did!  Basically I welded on a platform on the back and attached a 34cc chainsaw engine.  I forget the gear ratio I used, but even with the smallest sprocket I could fit on the chainsaws clutch plate and the biggest sprocket I could fit on the wheel, it still wasn’t enough reduction.  I added a shaft between the engine and the wheel to add sprockets to further reduce the drive speed.  The original plastic wheels couldn’t be used, so I replaced them with pneumatic castor wheels.   The end result is a top speed of about 20 – 25 km/h which is kind of scary with such small wheels.  After it was finished, I really only drove it a few times, but I did manage to get a video of one of those times.
